My name is Gisele, I come from Brazil, most precisely from the border between Brazil and Uruguay. Since an early age I could interact with a different culture and practice a different language, for what I consider myself very lucky. Later on, I have discovered my passion towards discovering the world and finding out how enriching it is to visit different places and to learn from different people and cultures. My Bachelor degree is in International Relations, from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). During the university time I have engaged myself in many extracurricular activities, such as the United Nations Models and, despite being already on a multidisciplinary course, I have also attended subjects from other undergraduate courses (e.g. Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Psychology). My final thesis’ title was “Understanding and Promoting Changes at the International System: Contributions of the Critical Theories of International Relations”. The Realist assumptions that the hard power from nations prevails over moral issues disturbed me because for me it gives the impression that things work in a certain way, and there is nothing we could do to change some unfair realities (namely: injustices). While Realist’s theories make us (common people) powerless, the Critical Theories empower us and highlights the importance of the human value as a focus for policies. So I can say that the reason behind my choice for MESCI, is my willingness to contribute for the reduction of social inequalities and my concern on ensuring and promoting human development through international cooperation.
